COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It can sometimes take a little while to develop as a leader. Given the time to grow and manifest itself within can be a critical factor for a team, and for the Tennessee Tech men's golf team, there's been no better example than Alexander Bassel

"Alexander is a diligent and focused worker," Tech head coach Polk Brown explained. "He's punctual, he never complains, he has a great work ethic, is solid in the classroom, and is extremely coachable. He's just a great example for the younger members of our team."

Representing a prime example of how to go about business, Bassel has grown into much more than a leader to the younger members of the Golden Eagle program. The fourth-year junior's impact can also be felt by his fellow upper classmen.

"This year especially, Alexander's development as a leader has truly shown through," Brown expressed. "His willingness to speak up in our team meetings is critical and he's always focused at practice. He does all of this with a consistently positive attitude."

Bassel competed in five of Tech's events during the regular season, always offering a helping eye and ear to his teammates on the road. He's done a remarkable job of staying accountable when he hasn't traveled during the season as well.

"Alexander is just an outstanding young man and a great ambassador for our program," Brown said. "He's one of the hardest workers on the team."

It is for these qualities and dedication that Bassel is the recipient of the 2024 March Unsung Leader Award presented by Golden Oak Sedation Dental & Implant Center.

The Unsung Leader Award is selected from student-athletes who have been nominated by their coaching staff or members of the TTU Athletics Department for exemplifying outstanding leadership qualities during a given month. The leadership can be shown on the field, in the weight room, at practice, in the classroom, in study hall, on campus, in the community or for a student club or organization.

The award honors a varsity student-athlete who has made a positive impact on their team and the Tennessee Tech community as a whole, through his or her dedication to demonstrating leadership traits, such as:

  • Keep learning, growing and improving;
  • Follow through with excellence;
  • Accomplish more than expected;
  • Inspire and motivate others.
