Tech wraps up first-day action at The Carolina Cup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team completed the first round of The Carolina Cup Sunday afternoon, competing at the Carolina Country Club. 

The purple and gold finished the day 14th overall with a score of 315. Winthrop and North Texas tied for the top spot in the rankings with matching scores of 292. Mercer's Tobias Jonsson and North Texas' Cody Winkler each tied at the top of the leaderboard of 83 golfers, posting 3-under 69s. 

A trio of Golden Eagles tied for the team lead following the first round of action, including junior Jackson Skeen, sophomore Anders Larson, and junior Avery Irwin. Among the three tied for 41st overall, Skeen recorded two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th hole for a 77. 

Larson delivered a trio of birdies for his round of 77 while Irwin carded a team-best five birdies as part of his score of 77.

Sophomore Haden Maxwell turned in one birdie on his way to a first-round tally of 84. Rounding out the Tech lineup was senior Mark McDearman, who recorded an 88. 

The second round of The Carolina Cup will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT for the Golden Eagles as part of another set of split tee times.
