COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Standing at 17-4 on the season, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team will look to defend its first-place spot in the Ohio Valley Conference Saturday as it welcomes in second-place Morehead State.
This will be the 72nd meeting between the Golden Eagles and Morehead State, with TTU owning the series edge at 52-19. Tech is currently riding an eight-game winning streak, with its last loss coming at Morehead back in January when the Golden Eagles fell, 78-53.
Junior center Brittany Darling led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15 in the first encounter with MSU, while freshman forward Molly Heady added nine points and nine rebounds.
Tech (17-4, 11-1 OVC) began its homestand with a 56-49 win over Eastern Kentucky Thursday. Junior guard Tacarra Hayes recorded her seventh career double-double with 29 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to pace the Golden Eagles.
Hayes, who leads the team in scoring with 324 points, became the 26th player to record 1,000 points in Tech women's basketball history as she tallied 29 against EKU. She will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the opening tip against Morehead State.
The last Golden Eagle to reach 1,000 points was Blair Bowens back in the 2008-09 season. Hayes is currently 26th on the all-time scoring list with 1,007 points and sits 66 points behind Leslie Van Winkle for 25th on the all-time scoring list.
Tech's 17-4 start is the best start the Golden Eagles have mustered since the 2000-01 season when TTU began the season 17-4.
Morehead State is 17-6 on the season and presently sits in second place in the OVC with a 10-2 conference record. The Eagles have won their last four contests against Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State, Austin Peay and Jacksonville State.
Opening tip between the Golden Eagles and the Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m., at Eblen Center.
Saturday's doubleheader is holding a pair of promotions including Scout Night and Overton County Night. Any Boy or Girl Scout who shows up at Eblen Center in uniform gets in free. Also, any resident of Overton County can purchase tickets for one dollar each.
