CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With the Ohio Valley Conference schedule winding down to the final five games of the regular season, the Tennessee Tech women are standing atop the league standings, locked in a tie with Lindenwood.
As the Golden Eagles get set for their final road contest Saturday afternoon against Southeast Missouri, there's still a lot on the line as the Golden Eagles bring a 10-game winning streak into the Show Me Center.
Tipoff Saturday is a 1:30 p.m. start in Cape Giardeau with Dylan Vazzano on the call on 106.1 The Eagle, while the game will also be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
The winning streak is one win shy of tying the longest streak in the Kim Rosamond era as her 2019-20 Golden Eagles won 11 straight games – a stretch that was the fifth-longest in program history.
The conference race still remains tight as well. Tech and Lindenwood – both 13-2 in the conference – are both looking for the double-bye in the OVC Basketball Championships in Evansville, but Eastern Illinois still stands one game back at 12-3, while Little Rock is still within striking range at 11-5, as is Southern Indiana at 10-5.
From there, UT Martin (8-7) and Western Illinois (6-9) are still in good shape to make the tournament field, while Morehead State (3-12), Tennessee State (3-12), SIUE (2-13) and Southeast Missouri (2-13) are still trying to work their way into the bracket. With five games remaining, everyone in the league still has a chance to get in the eight-team field.
It's that fact that makes Saturday's game intriguing. With the Redhawks trying to make a push for the postseason, the contest against the Golden Eagles stands as a chance to shake up the standings and play spoiler. However, Tech has won the last seven games against the Redhawks after the Golden Eagles broke a 7-0 losing streak and nine losses in 10 meetings between 2015 and 2021.
During Tech's current 10-game winning streak, the Golden Eagles are averaging 73.3 points on offense with five players averaging double-digit scoring, including Reghan Grimes (13.8 ppg), Keeley Carter (13.5 ppg), Chloe Larry (13.1 ppg), Peyton Carter (11.3 ppg) and Anna Walker (11.0 ppg). Defensively, Tech is allowing 59.6 points during that stretch.
The Golden Eagles are shooting .439 from the floor during the span, .372 from 3-point range with an average of 8.0 treys per game, and .769 at the free-throw line with an average of 17.3 free throws. Tech is averaging 14.1 assists to opponents' 8.9 and outrebounding its foes 37.4 to 32.1.
Southeast Missouri (4-20 overall) has lost 12 straight games, its last victory coming on January 2 at Tennessee State – a 75-68 win. The only other conference win for the Redhawks was on December 21 with a 67-61 victory against SIUE.
Of the Redhawks' 13 league losses, seven have been by double digits and three by 24 or more points. Six have been by single-digits and two by less than five points. Tech won the earlier meeting between the two teams by a 79-66 score as the Golden Eagles had six players score in double figures, led by Rehan Grimes with 16 and Anna Walker with 15. Tech shot 25-for-34 from the free-throw line and outscored SEMO 28-14 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Following Saturday's game at Cape Girardeau, the Golden Eagles return home to the Eblen Center Thursday to take on UT Martin.
