COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was a solid week for the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team and the Ohio Valley Conference took notice as the Golden Eagles were selected for all three weekly awards on Tuesday morning.
Junior guard Reghan Grimes was named the Player of the Week, while graduate guard Keeley Carter shared the Newcomer of the Week award and freshman guard Chloe Larry shared the Freshman of the Week honor.
The awards are nominated and voted on by the league's sports information contacts.
Grimes, a Nashville native, led all scorers in Tech's 91-79 loss at Colorado last week. In that game, she was 10-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while also going 3-for-4 at the line. Grimes also collected four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block against the Buffaloes, who made the NCAA Sweet 16 the last two seasons.
The Tech junior led the Golden Eagles to their most points against a Power 4 program since scoring 85 against Mississippi State in the 2001-02 campaign.
She followed that performance up with 14 points on Friday against the University of the Cumberlands on 6-for-9 shooting with three rebounds, a steal and a block.
Carter, the Trevecca transfer from nearby Lafayette, powered the Golden Eagles late against the Buffaloes with 13 second-half points out of 15 total as she was 5-for-7 from the field. Carter also pulled down five rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded a steal.
The Macon County product also scored 10 points on Friday against Cumberlands with five more assists and a steal against the visiting Patriots.
Larry, from Bossier City, La., was held to four points with two assists and a steal against Colorado, but turned it up against Cumberlands on Friday as she led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The true freshman knocked down three 3-pointers and went 6-for-7 at the charity stripe while also collecting five boards and three assists.
Western Illinois junior forward Mia Nicastro shared the Newcomer of the Week honor as she collected a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 95-52 loss at Cincinnati. Morehead State freshman guard Chrishawn Coleman shared the Freshman of the Week award as she averaged 13.5 points and 1.5 rebounds with 13 points and six steals against Alice Lloyd and 14 points, two rebounds and a steal against Bellarmine.
The Golden Eagles are idle this week with final exams and commencement but will return to action next Tuesday as they open Ohio Valley Conference play at Western Illinois.
