CHARLESTON, Ill. – It was just one of those nights. The Tennessee Tech women had good looks at the basket and took more shots than the home-standing Eastern Illinois squad, but those shots just didn't fall.
Coupled with the Panthers scoring 29 points off of 19 Golden Eagle turnovers, it made for a disheartening night for the Tech women in a 71-40 loss in Charleston as EIU remained unbeaten in league play.
Taris Thornton led the Golden Eagles (9-5, 3-2 Ohio Valley Conference) with 13 points. Peyton Carter narrowly missed a double-double as she scored nine points on 4-for-5 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds. Chloe Larry rounded out the Tech leaders with eight points.
In all, the Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 28.6 percent from the field, held to single digits in the first and fourth quarters with nine and eight points respectively. Tech shot 26.7 percent (4-for-15) in the opening stanza, then 23.1 percent (3-for-13). Even things that normally go right for the Golden Eagles didn't as Tech went 1-for-10 from long-range and was held to eight assists to 19 turnovers.
It didn't help as the Panthers shot the lights out, hitting at a 56.4-percent clip from the field as EIU knocked down 31-of-55 shots, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range.
The damage wasn't done at the line though as the Panthers were 4-for-5 and Tech 7-of-9 at the stripe as the Golden Eagles only had 11 fouls to EIU's 15.
The Panthers (9-6, 6-0 OVC) shot 47.1 percent in the opening quarter, 53.3 percent in the second, 60.0 in the third and 69.2 in the fourth.
Macy McGlone led EIU with 16 points and 11 rebounds as she was 7-for-14 from the field, while also making a case for a quadruple-double with five assists and five blocks. Kyley Flowers also scored 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting with five steals.
The Golden Eagles won't have to dwell on the loss long as they'll take on SIUE on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be carried on 106.1 The Eagle and ESPN+ (subscription required).
Tech will return home next Thursday night as it takes on Southeast Missouri.
