Golden Eagles Give Back at Healthy Kids Day

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive year, members of the Golden Eagle women's basketball team partcipated in Healthy Kids Day, an annual event promoting youth health and wellness within the community.

Sponsored by the Putnam County YMCA, Healthy Kids Day featured representatives from a variety of local businesses advocating physical activity and healthy living amongst the children of Cookeville.

Businesses in attendance included Chick-Fil-A, offering healthy snack options such as fruit and yogurt, and the Stevens Street School of Performing Arts. There were also numerous booths set up to provide information on health topics such as allergies, asthma, and sinuses.

"The Healthy Kids Day is a great event," Golden Eagle assistant coach Coretta Brown said. "Being coaches and student-athletes, we always want to promote being in shape. We want to see kids get out there and be active, so we jumped at the opportunity to get involved."

The TTU women's basketball team was on-site to interact with children during the event, which included some autograph signings and a casual shoot around with their youngest fans.

"Whenever you're blessed with opportunities to do things like this, it's our responsibility to get out there and show support," Golden Eagle junior Katherine Barker said. "The community shows its support for us by coming to all of our games, so it's really important that we give back."

The event also gave the team a chance to do some off-court bonding in the off-season, something that will serve to benefit them on the floor.

"We're losing a lot of seniors this year, so a lot of people will need to step up to fill those leadership roles," Barker continued. "Events like this give us an opportunity to get a feel for one another and spend some time together off the court."
