Harris and Hayes net OVC honors

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- After guiding the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 conference mark last week, Tennessee Tech senior Tacarra Hayes and sophomore Jala Harris have received a pair of Ohio Valley Conference awards with Hayes being named Player of the Week and Harris the Newcomer of the Week.

Tennessee Tech opened the week with a 68-50 win over Morehead State, and closed up shop with an 80-71 win over Tennessee State.

Hayes was named the OVC Player of the Week after averaging 22 points, 7.5 rebounds and six assists per game in Tech’s victories. She began the week with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven helpers against MSU, and followed with 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists against TSU.

This is Hayes’ second OVC Player of the Week award of the season and seventh of her career at TTU. The 44 points she scored during the week vaulted her two spots up the all-time scorer’s list at Tech, as she is now 11th all-time in scoring with 1,506 points.

Harris earned her first OVC Newcomer of the Week award after averaging 20 points, while shooting 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point line during Tech’s two victories. Against MSU, Harris posted a game-high 18 points. She followed with a 22-point performance against TSU, which tied her career-high at Tech. Harris proved to be a deep threat against the Tigers, as she connected on four long-range shots.

Briana Morrow from Jacksonville State was named the OVC Freshman of the Week.

Tech returns to action Saturday evening as it travels to Murray State for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
