Golden Eagles finish sixth at The Carolina Cup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team concluded play at The Carolina Cup Tuesday afternoon, finishing off the third and final round of action at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Golden Eagles ended the week sixth among the eight teams in the field, recording a 310 in the final round for a total of 918. Wofford claimed the team title with a total score of 875, sporting a 291 on the final day of play. Individually, Wofford's Ben Jordan and Winthrop's Ashton Eubanks tied for medalist honors, each finishing at 215 for the week.

For the purple and gold, it was junior Haden Maxwell providing the top performance on the week by tying for 17th with a score of 224. The veteran carded a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, producing five birdies along the way. Right behind him on the leaderboard, finishing tied for 24th with a 226, was freshman Drew Bolton, who tallied an 84 on the day.

Competing as an individual, Alex Broyles wrapped up a solid showing with one birdie and a 79 for his third round. The sophomore tied for 34th behind a three-day total of 232. Freshman Hil Thompson delivered his top round of the week on Tuesday, firing a 75 with a pair of birdies. Tying for 42nd in the field of 56, the youngster totaled 234 for the event.

Rounding out the Tech scoring on Tuesday was senior Alexander Bassel, turning in a 78 on his way to a total score of 245. Fellow senior Avery Irwing concluded his first tournament of the year with a third round of 99 and a total score of 267. Sophomore Matthew Shull officially withdrew from competition prior to Tuesday's third round due to injury, concluding the event with scores of 77 and 84.

The Golden Eagles continue a stretch of three straight weeks of competition with a trip to Kennesaw, Ga. and the Pinetree Intercollegiate next Monday through Tuesday, held at Pinetree Country Club.
