Bolton tied for overall lead, Tech fifth after day two at The Carolina Cup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was much of the same for the Tennessee Tech men's golf team following round two of The Carolina Cup Monday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles matched their first-round total during their second tour of The Carolina Country Club.

The purple and gold recorded a 304 for the second day in a row in Spartanburg, S.C., maintaining its position of fifth place among the eight teams in the competition. Wofford skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard following a 284 on the day, taking a six-stroke lead.

Tech rookie Drew Bolton not only led the Cookeville crew for the second straight day, he concluded his second round tied for the overall lead among the 56 golfers. The freshman fired off six birdies on his way to a 2-under 70, matching the effort of Western Carolina's Jace Butcher, who also tied for the top spot through day two with a total of 142.

Following Bolton's lead was Haden Maxwell, tying for 22nd after concluding the second round with a total of 151. The junior turned in a birdie and 12 pars on his way to a 77 on the day. Alex Broyles was next among the Tech participants, tying for 33rd in the field with a 153 while competing as an individual. The sophomore produced three birdies while delivering a 73 on the day.

Back to the lineup, it was Hil Thompson tying for 47th overall behind a second-round tally of 78. The freshman managed a pair of birdies while upping his total to 159 for the tournament. Senior Alexander Bassel rounded out the scoring bunch for the Golden Eagles on the day, carding a 79 with one birdie and an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to bring his two-day total to 167.

Sophomore Matthew Shull also compiled a birdie and an eagle on the par-5 18th, his second such showing on the hole in as many rounds, heading into day three with a score of 161. Competing as an individual, senior Avery Irwin turned in an 88 behind one birdie to finish the day with a composite score of 168.

The third and final round of The Carolina Cup is slated to kick off Tuesday morning with split tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT.
