COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- It’s a race against time. Every 69
seconds, someone dies of breast cancer. Each year, 1.1 million
women worldwide are diagnosed. Tech athletics is joining the fight,
and helping in the best way possible, by volunteering.
Millions of volunteers across America are standing together to help raise funds and educate people in the battle against breast cancer. This weekend, several Golden Eagle student-athletes will participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held on Tech’s campus. An event that many Golden Eagles are passionate about, several Tech athletes have been directly impacted by the disease, whether it be relatives, friends or past teammates.
Two special events will be held Sunday afternoon: the Susan G.
Komen Race for the Cure starts and finishes in the large parking
lot next to the football stadium, and the Tech soccer team will
host its annual Think Pink game. The all-day affair begins
with Tailgating for the Cure. The community can come together and
Pink it Out! There will also be kids activities from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. Tech's OVC soccer match against Jacksonville State will kick
off at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
At the end of the game, the women’s basketball and
volleyball teams will head to the race to volunteer at water
stations and walk in the race and cheer on the hundreds of runners
and walkers.
The soccer team will wear pink headbands and add other pink touches to the Tech Soccer Stadium in recognition of its Think Pink match. Fans are invited to wear pink to the match to show their support, as well.
The Susan G. Komen for the cure is the largest breast cancer organization and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer with nearly $1.5 billion invested to date.
