Tech women's basketball to host Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday

COOKEVILLE, Tenn.—The Tennessee Tech women's basketball team (0-1) will turn things around quickly as they get right back into action on Monday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan (2-2) in a 5:30 p.m. contest in the Hooper Eblen Center.

The Golden Eagles lead the series over the Bulldogs 4-0.

The last time Tech and Tennessee Wesleyan faced was in the 2015 season in an exhibition contest, however, their last official meeting was in the 2013 -14 season when the Golden Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 94-41. 

In last year's exhibition matchup, Tech defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 71-52.

Former Golden Eagle standout Samaria Howard led Tech with 16 points. Howard hit seven of 17 attempts from the field, while connecting on 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. 

Treyvonna Brooks and Hannah Goolsby also scored in double-figures for the Golden Eagles. Brooks put up 14 points, hitting 6-of-10 from the floor. She tallied five boards, three steals, two assists, and one block in the contest. Goolsby notched 12 points for Tech, shooting 50% from the field (3-6) and 75% from the 3-point range (3-4). She also connected on 3-of-4 from the line, while tallying three assists and one steal.

Jara Gasper led the Bulldogs with 12 points, shooting 25% from the floor (3-9) and 41.6% (5-7) from the charity stripe. Melanie Baker added 11 points and six boards for TWC, while Sarah McKinnon notched six points and six rebounds in the game. 

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 34.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 75 percent from the line. Tech tallied 49 boards, 15 assists, 15 steals, and three blocks to Tennessee Wesleyan's 43 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and one block. The Golden Eagles forced 23 turnovers, while only allowing 12. 

The Bulldogs shot 36 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from downtown, and 52 percent from the line.

Thus far this season, Tennessee Wesleyan averages 79.8 points per game. The Bulldogs shoot 45.5 percent from the floor, 40 percent from downtown, and 75 percent from the free throw line. Tech averages 65.0 points on the season, while shooting 29 percent from the field, 17.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 61.1 percent from the charity stripe.

Akia Harris and Yaktavia Hickson are leading the way for the Purple and Gold squad. Both Harris and Hickson put up 12 points in their season opener versus Wright State. Harris shot 38.5 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from the three-point range while adding on four rebounds. Hickson shot 28.6 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe while grabbing four of the glass.
