Tech women rally, but fall in overtime at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After the first few minutes of Wednesday's matinee in Nashville, things almost seemed a little bleak for the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team.

But a surge in the second half allowed the Golden Eagles to rally and take the game into an extra session.

However, Lipscomb's Loren Cagle hit a layup with two seconds remaining in overtime. Tech had the ball one last time, and Treyvonna "Trey" Brooks attempted a last-ditch 3-pointer to win the game, but the shot was no good with the Bison taking a 71-69 victory.

After a 7-0 run drought to start the game put them into a hole, the Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before Tech started to climb back into contention.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game as Akia Harris drained a 3-pointer with 8:40 remaining in regulation to put Tech up 51-50. The Golden Eagles led 63-62 with 1:09 left as Cagle completed a 3-point play with a free throw, then Alex Banks hit a layup with 13 ticks left on the clock to put Lipscomb up 64-63.

Yaktavia "Shug" Hickson tied the game and sent it into the extra session as she drew a foul and hit the second of her two tries at the charity stripe to make it a 64-64 game.

Tech falls to 3-10 on the season as the Golden Eagles enter their holiday break.

Hickson led Tech with 24 points as she was 7-for-14 from the field and 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Asia Harper had 12 points for Tech as she led the team's effort through the first half.

Brooks recorded double-digit rebounds as she pulled down 10 boards, while she also scored six points and dished out six assists.

As a team, Tech shot 36.4 percent (4-for-11) in the opening period, then steadily improved, shooting 56.3 (9-for-16) in the second, 50 (6-for-12) in the third, then 63.6 (7-for-11) in the fourth.

Lipscomb, by contrast, cooled off after shooting a strong 57.1 percent clip in the opening period as the Bison were 8-for-14 from the floor. The percentage slipped to 8-for-19 (42.1) in the second, 4-for-12 (33.3) in the third and 5-for-14 (35.7) in the fourth.

Tech dominated the boards, outrebounding Lipscomb 44-27. However, the Golden Eagles turned the ball over 29 times, which led to 27 Lipscomb points.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bison, led by Banks with 20. Cagle and Northway each scored 14, while Meredith Lovelady scored 12.

Tech returns to action on Dec. 29 as it travels to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri to open Ohio Valley Conference play.
