Most spirited student
group to receive $250 cash prize!
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech men's and women's
basketball teams will host a double-header against Southeast
Missouri Saturday night in Eblen Center, with the women's game
tipping things off at 5:30 p.m. The most spirited student group in
attendance will receive a 250 dollar cash prize. Groups should
bring a sign or banner in order to receive recognition.
On the women’s side of things, the Golden Eagles hold an
advantage against Southeast Missouri in the all-time series between
the two programs. Tech has won 25 of their 43 meetings dating back
to their first game, which took place during the 1991-92
season.
However, the Redhawks have had TTU’s number of late, winning
each of the last six contests, including their 61-56 triumph over
tech to begin the 2010 calendar year. The Golden Eagles erased a
13-point halftime deficit to tie the game late in the second half
but could not complete the comeback as the Redhawks captured the
five-point victory. Krystal Stirrup came off the bench to score 21
points for the Tech, while Rachel Glidden added 10.
SEMO has a 3-4 mark since its first game against Tech, picking up
two wins against Jacksonville State and one against Eastern
Kentucky. Tech has a 2-6 record since that time with its two wins
coming against Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay.
On Thursday, both teams were in action as Southeast Missouri earned
a road win at Jacksonville State, while the Golden Eagles fell
against conference-leading Eastern Illinois.
The Redhawks will be without at least one of their starters from
their first meeting with Tech as their leading scorer, Jasmine
Davis, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Two
other SEMO starters from the first meeting, Bailee Roberts and
Lauren Sharpe, may also be forced to miss the action with
injuries.
Going into Saturday’s game, Tech will be led by Tacarra
Hayes, who is currently second in the OVC in scoring during
conference play at 17.9 points per game. The guard finished with a
team-high 19 points and four steals against Eastern Illinois on
Thursday and leads the conference in steals per game (2.5 spg) in
OVC-only games.
The Tennessee Tech men’s basketball team will go look to
complete a sweep of its four-game homestand when it hosts Southeast
Missouri in Eblen Center Saturday night at 7:30. Tech is coming off
wins against Austin Peay, Tennessee State, and Eastern Illinois,
and has won four of its last five games.
Tech owns a 27-12 all-time advantage over SEMO, and coach Mike
Sutton’s Golden Eagles are 14-2 against the Redhawks. The
Golden Eagles have won the last four meetings, including an 82-73
victory in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 2. Tech has won 13 of the last 14
against SEMO.
The Redhawks have five different players who can be primary scoring
options. Anthony Allison, Sam Pearson, Derek Thompson, Cameron
Butler and Marland Smith are all averaging between 8.7 and 10.0
points for SEMO. The Redhawks shoot 42.6 percent from the field and
average 65.3 points per game. They enter the contest with a 6-14
record overall and 3-7 mark in OVC play. They are 2-8 on the road
this season.
Tech is led by sophomore Kevin Murphy, who is averaging 15.0 points
per game. Senior Kevin Murphy is scoring 14.9 points per game, and
scored the 1,000th point of his Tech career on Thursday night
against Eastern Illinois. Davis is only the seventh active player
in the Ohio Valley Conference to reach 1,000 points.
The Golden Eagles are 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the OVC. Tech is
riding a three-game win streak and has moved up to fifth place in
the OVC standings.
