COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech men's basketball team
continues its four-game season-opening road trip Thursday night
when it travels to Nashville to visit in-state foe Lipscomb at 7
p.m. in Allen Arena.
The Golden Eagles own a dominating 38-3 all-time record against the Bisons, but this year's Lipscomb squad was picked to win the Atlantic Sun Conference, and features three players averaging over 18 points per game. Adnan Hodzic is scoring 22 points per game, Brandon Brown has averaged 19 and Josh Slater has chipped in 18.5 for Lipscomb, but the Bisons have dropped their first two contests against Elon and Vanderbilt.
Tech and Lipscomb squared off twice last season, meeting on the hardwood for the first time since the 1974-75 season. Tech won both games last year, taking an 83-72 decision in Nashville and a 78-71 victory in Cookeville.
The Golden Eagles are off to a 1-1 start this season after opening with a loss at No. 18 Minnesota, and defeating Central Arkansas 71-67 in the first of four games for Tech in the Hall of Fame Showcase. The Golden Eagles will also face Memphis, Oakland and Kansas in the showcase.
Tech got 16 points from Kevin Murphy and Elijah Cunningham-Muhammad in the win over UCA, while Frank Davis and Jud Dillard each added 10. Murphy is leading the Golden Eagles with 13.5 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Muhammad's 3.0 assists per game is tops on the team.
Murphy's 16-point performance against UCA was the sophomore's fourth consecutive double-figure scoring effort, and his 11th in the last 13 games, dating back to last season. Freshman Jud Dillard scored 10 consecutive points against the Bears to help Tech hold onto its lead and counter a UCA flurry in the second half. Fellow freshman, and high school teammate of Dillard's, Terrell Barnes flirted with a double-double in just his second collegiate game, finishing with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround after facing Lipscomb on Thursday, as they head to Memphis to take on the Memphis Tigers one day later. Tech will return to Cookeville for their home opener against Oakland on Nov. 23. The Golden Eagles will then visit Southern Utah on Nov. 25 and No. 1 Kansas on Nov. 27 before returning home to for four of their next five games.
