COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Golden Eagle senior Frank Davis will bid
for the 1,000th point of his career, and the Tennessee Tech
men’s basketball team will look for its third win in four
games when it takes on Tennessee State in Eblen Center Saturday
night. Tech is coming off a 94-90 victory over rival Austin Peay on
Jan. 21, and is looking to climb up the Ohio Valley Conference
standings.
Tech will welcome back some of the best and most memorable
men’s and women’s basketball players from the past as
Saturday night is Basketball Alumni Night.
Tech enters the game at 9-10 overall and is 3-5 in OVC play.
Tennessee State is 4-16 on the season and 1-7 in the OVC. The
Golden Eagles hold a 25-23 edge in the all-time series against
Tennessee State. The two teams have split the season series in each
of the last two seasons, with the road team winning all four games.
However, the Tigers are 1-11 in road games this season and 0-4 on
the road in the OVC. TSU has three players averaging double figures
in points, with Josh Sain scoring 15.1 points per game, to go along
with 10.2 from Robert Covington and 10.0 from Jacquan Nobles. TSU
has lost eight of its last nine games.
Tech is led by Davis, who earlier this season broke the school
record for all-time 3-pointers made. If Davis hits his average of
15.6 points per game he will become the 31st player in Tech history
and the seventh active player in the OVC to join the 1,000 point
club.
Despite 25 points from Davis in Tech’s win over Austin Peay
Thursday night, freshman Jud Dillard stole the show. Dillard scored
a career-high 23 points on 11-of-12 shooting, and had 17 points in
the deciding second half. Dillard is averaging 8.8 points and 4.1
rebounds per game in his freshman campaign.
Golden Eagle junior Alfred Jones became the only active Tech
player to record a double-double, as he chipped in with 12 points
and 12 rebounds for Tech in the victory over Austin Peay. Jones is
leading the OVC in field goal percentage, hitting 68.0 percent of
his shots.
The most spirited student group in attendance will receive a
250-dollar cash prize.
