Golden Eagles close out 2015 season with OVC road win at EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. – In one of its most complete, well-balanced efforts of the entire season, the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team put together a sensational second half to close the 2014-15 season with an 84-71 Ohio Valley Conference road victory at Eastern Kentucky Saturday night.

Senior T'Keyah Williams was one of three Golden Eagles to score in double digits, wrapping up her career with 18 points and five rebounds. She was 5-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-11 at the free throw line.

Fellow senior Candace Parson bowed out with seven points and eight rebounds to give coach Jim Davis an effective one-two punch in the front court.

Junior Samaria Howard, the team's leading scorer, finished her first season on the roster as the game's leading scorer with 25 points, hitting 9-for-18 fro the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. She also snapped off nine rebounds.

Sophomore Hannah Goolsby also chipped in with double digits in the scoring column, pouring through 17 points bolstered by her 3-for-7 night from outside the 3-point arc and a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity line. She also had five of Tech 12 assists.

Sophomore Catherine Taylor added seven points and eight rebounds.

The Colonels had three players in double figures in scoring, topped by 17 from Shameekia Murray. Jasmine Henshaw added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Michaela Hunter finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Golden Eagles had an edge in shooting (43 percent to 39 percent), 3-point shooting (29 percent to 15 percent) and free throw shooting (79 percent to 53 percent). Tech also owned a convincing 48-38 advantage in rebounds.

Those numbers helped overcome EKU's 16-4 advantage in fast-break points, while EKU forced 19 turnovers and had a 17-12 edge in assists.

Despite leading 38-31 at halftime, Tech appeared headed for the loss column early in the second half when the hosts outscored Tech 27-12 in the opening few minutes and built a 58-50 lead with 9:52 to play.

But the Golden Eagles found the secret, and put together a 19-4 run featuring two tip-in baskets from Williams, a pair of 3-pointers by Goolsby and two baskets by Howard to forge a 69-62 Golden Eagle lead with 4:11 remaining.

Free throws down the stretch plus a 3-pointer by Taylor allowed the Golden Eagles to expand the lead to the final 13- point margin. The Golden Eagle defense also tightened up, forcing EKU to miss seven of its next eight shots while building the lead.
