Tech falls in Nashville, 59-53 to Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women's basketball team fell in Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday evening at the hands of host Belmont University, 59-53.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the first half. With 3:59 left in the opening period, Tech trailed by 12, 25-13. However, Tech closed the half with 9-0 run, keeping the game within reach at the intermission.

The second half mimicked the first, with the Bruins taking an early advantage, and Tech fighting to close the gap.

With 6:45 left in the game, the Bruins took a 51-33 lead, and looked to be running away with it. The Golden Eagles fought bought, and converted a 20-8 run over the final six minutes, but it was not enough as the push came too late, and the Bruins came out on top, 59-53.

Junior Samaria Howard led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Candace Parson added 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Freshman Yaktavia Hickson added eight point, going a perfect three for three from the field, and two of two from beyond the arch.

The Bruins had four different players in double figures on the night. Belmont's two post players, Frankie Joubran and Sally McCabe, each scored 15 points. Joubran added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while McCabe added eight boards and a game-high 4 blocks. Sierra Jones added 12 points off the bench, while Katie Carroll added 10.

The Golden Eagles get a week off before returning home to host Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. CST.
