COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech athletic department has recently welcomed Steve Wallace from the University of Rhode Island to the Golden Eagle women’s basketball staff. Wallace, who was the 2009-10 Director of Operations for URI’s women’s basketball program, assumed the title of assistant coach effective June 1, 2010.
At Tech, Wallace will shoulder responsibilities including but not limited to recruiting, post player development and day-to-day that will assist with the development of the team.
“I am very excited about Coach Wallace joining our program,” said Golden Eagle Head Coach Sytia Messer. “He brings a lot of energy, hard work and determination to our program.”
Prior to his time at Rhode Island, Wallace completed a two-year graduate assistantship with the women’s basketball team at his alma mater, the University of Kansas, where he earned his degree in secondary education-social studies in 2007.
As a second-year GA manager, he assisted with pre-game scouting of opponents, editing and production of team videos and the organization of the men’s practice team. Wallace also assumed the responsibility of the assistant director of the Bonnie Henrickson summer camps and clinics.
During his first year as a GA, he was enlisted to help with recruiting while a member of the KU coaching staff was out on maternity leave.
While with the Jayhawk program, KU made two WNIT appearances, including the 2009 championship game. Wallace worked with the on-court development of 2009 First Team All-Big 12 selection Danielle McCray and 2008 Big 12 All-Rookie pick Krysten Boogaard.
Before his graduate assistantship undertaking, Wallace spent two seasons as a team manager with the KU women's basketball team. During that time, he was responsible for video breakdown and was the practice team captain.
In addition to his work at Kansas, Wallace spent two summers as an intern in the basketball operations office for the Utah Jazz, helping the team prepare for the NBA Draft and Rocky Mountain Revue.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the staff here at Tennessee Tech,” said Wallace. “I know that my past experiences have prepared me to be effective as a coach for the women’s basketball team, and I am eager to contribute this season.”
