MOREHEAD, Ky. - The good news is that the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team attempted a season-high 76 shots from the field on Saturday night against Morehead State. The bad news is that only 17 fell through the net.
The Golden Eagles dropped their second straight OVC road contest with an 80-45 loss to the second-place Morehead State Eagles at Johnson Arena. Tech shot a season-low 22.4 percent from the field for the game as the team drops to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in conference. With Jacksonville State's win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday night, the Golden Eagles fall into a tie for ninth place in the OVC.
The Eagles had six players with at least eight points as they move to 18-7 overall and 11-2 in the OVC. Ashley Martin and Courtney Lumpkin each finished with 15 points to lead MSU. Ashar Harris had a big night on the boards with 18 rebounds in addition to her nine points.
For Tennessee Tech, freshman Kellie Cook posted the first double-double of her career as she totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cook's double-double is the sixth for the Golden Eagles this season.
A bright spot off the bench for Tech was the play of Alison West Mason who tallied career highs of nine points and four rebounds in 23 minutes of action. A transfer from Cumberland University, West Mason finished 2-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc in her first extended action of the season.
Golden Eagle freshman Katherine Barker made her 10th consecutive start but was limited to just two minutes of action after being forced out of the game with an injury. Barker has been the defensive stopper for Tech this season and held Morehead State's Chynna Bozeman, the OVC's leading scorer, to a career-low three points when the two teams met earlier this season. Without Barker, the Golden Eagles still held Bozeman to just 12 points on the evening, seven below her average.
Tech's leading scorer Tacarra Hayes entered the game second in the conference in scoring at 16.7 points per contest but was held in check and managed just four points on 2-of-10 shooting in 16 minutes of playing time.
