COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Fans of Tennessee Tech women's basketball helped the University recognize the program for being one of the most successful in the nation during a special pregame presentation Saturday.
On the final day of the 2008-09 season, the Golden Eagles defeated Jacksonville State and added another historic chapter to the program's phenomenal record book. With that win, Tennessee Tech accomplished what only six other programs have achieved in the history of Division I women's basketball, reaching the rarified 800-win plateau.

right in photo) handed a commemorative basketball signifying the
800 wins to current head coach Sytia Messer (at left in photo).
The women's intercollegiate basketball program was established in
1970 by Marynell Meadors, who directed the team through the first
17 seasons. In 1986, her assistant coach, Bill Worrell, took over
the role of head coach and directed Tech through 20 highly
successful seasons. Brown was the third head coach in the team's
history, being named to the position in 2006 from her post as
associate head coach.
In August, Tech named just the fourth head coach in the 40-year
history of the program when Messer was announced to lead the Golden
Eagles.
The commemorative game ball will be placed on display in Eblen
Center as a tribute to all of the outstanding young women who have
come through the program as student-athletes, as well as the four
coaches who have directed the program.
