COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - On Monday afternoon, head women's basketball coach Sytia Messer had lunch with the Cookeville Lions Club and shared her journey to Tennessee Tech and her thoughts on the upcoming season.

"We are going to be a young team," Messer said of her roster that consists of six freshman, five sophomores, one junior and one senior. "But I'm really proud of the way the freshmen have come in and bought into my system. They are a great group and have been working hard since day one."

Messer also discussed the importance of practices, which began in mid-October, and being a disciplined team.

"There will not be anything that our players will face in a game that they have not seen in practice," Messer said.

In addition, Messer extended her gratitude to the Cookeville Lions Club and the community for their support of the team and Tennessee Tech Athletics.

"I can't thank you enough for welcoming me to the community like you all have," Messer said. "I'm very excited about helping this program return to the success that it has experienced over the years."

Fans can see coach Messer and the women's basketball team in action for the first time this season in an exhibition contest against Tennessee Wesleyan on November 5 at the Eblen Center. Tech begins the regular season on November 13 at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Tournament where the Golden Eagles will face off against Alabama.
