Kellie Cook named OVC Freshman of the Week

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Kellie Cook has shined through the first half of the 2009-10 season, and after three consecutive standout performances last week, the 5-foot-11 guard was named OVC Freshman of the Week.

Cook, a native of Madison, Ala., earned her first OVC Freshman of the Week distinction after posting a team-leading 20.3 points per game during Tech's last three contests. She also chipped in with 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game as the Golden Eagles defeated OVC-leading Eastern Kentucky and lost close contests against Eastern Illinois and Morehead State.

To begin the week, Cook tallied 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, against EIU to go along with a pair of steals in 38 minutes of action. Then, against Morehead State, she scored 16 points and tied her career high with nine rebounds.

Cook capped the week with a 23-point performance against Eastern Kentucky to match her career high for points in a game. She got the Golden Eagles off to a fast start against the conference-leading Colonels, scoring 13 of the team's first 15 points on three 3-pointers, a pair of free throws and a mid-range jumper to help put the team ahead, 15-0, less than four minutes into the game. For the game, Cook posted 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists while going a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line.

Through Tech's first five OVC games, Cook is not only the top freshman scorer in the conference, but she leads the league with a 17.0 points per game average in conference-only games. In OVC play, Cook also ranks first in the conference in free throw percentage (92.9 percent), third in minutes played (34.4 per game), fifth in 3-pointers made per game (2.4 per game) and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage (41.4 percent).

Cook is the second Golden Eagle to receive OVC Freshman of the Week honors this season as fellow freshman Tiara Hopper earned the honor as well. Sophomore Tacarra Hayes, who narrowly missed being named the OVC Player of the Week after averaging 18.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game in three games last week, earned OVC Player of the Week honors following the first week of the season.

Cook and the Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, January 14 when they travel to UT Martin for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
