JACKSON, Tenn. -- When Henry County's Katy Beth Glover takes her golf game to Tennessee Tech, she can take the title of The Jackson Sun's 2009 Female Golfer of the Year award with her.

"That's a hard question," Glover said when asked when she realized she could play golf. "I was told I had potential, (so) I got with (personal golf teacher) George Cogbill, tried and was never bored with it.

"He made it interesting, and I wanted to (play) everyday."

A few of the days were more memorable than others.

Glover made three straight appearances in the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament and placed 12th overall her senior year after shooting a two-day total of 156.

In Glover's junior season, her opening-round 78 was her only round in the rain-shortened tournament, and she finished eighth and was named all-state.

"My sophomore year, it was a new experience," Glover said. "It was different than any other tournament, and I was there for the experience."

Glover opened her senior year by shooting a 76 to win the Wingfoot Golf Classic, and she was named All-District 10-AAA for four years and All-Region 5-AAA the last three.

Glover tied for first in this year's district tournament with a 75 but lost in a playoff.

"It's a sport you have to put more hours into, all day, any time you can," Glover said. "It taught me to be patient, which I wasn't before golf."

Glover said she chose Tennessee Tech over Middle Tennessee State.

"It was just a different feeling," Glover said. "It's a great school. I have friends who are on the golf team, and it's just where I belonged."

Choosing a major will come later, but Glover knows she is prepared for her next step in life.

"I'm mentally prepared for anything that comes at me," Glover said. "My parents gave me encouragement, and this is a big step for me to play at another level."
