Golden Eagles tie ribbon on UNCG Fall Invitational with strong singles round

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team capped its three-day stay at the UNCG Fall Invitational with a sharp singles performance, as the Golden Eagles secured wins in three-of-five matchups in a bout with Campbell.

After playing a combined three singles rounds and a trio of doubles rounds over the first two days, Tech locked up with the Camels for five singles clashes in TTU's only round of the day.

Rafael Tosetto, Evzen Holis and Mika Berghaus all picked up straight-set victories to carry the Golden Eagles in the strong solo showing. Andrea Rodeia and Elias Grubert rounded out TTU's body of work with a pair of two-set losses.

With Tech's first fall tournament now in the rearview mirror, the Golden Eagles will set their sights on the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Knoxville Sept. 23-27.


Saturday 9/11 RECAP

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A strong showing was the story for the Tennessee Tech tennis team, as the Golden Eagles collected wins in all three of their matchups in Saturday's second day of the UNCG Fall Invitational.

Tech's unblemished day featured singles rounds with Radford and UNC Asheville, as well as a doubles matchup against Campbell. Tech secured a 4-3 nod over the Highlanders, a 5-2 victory against the Bulldogs and captured wins in two of three doubles clashes en route to the triumph over the Camels.

In Tech's singles tangle with Radford, Andre Rodeia, Elias Grubert, Evzen Holis and Rafael Tosetto all collected two-set victories. Mika Berghaus, Carlos Vicente and Jun Sasagawa were all saddled with two-set losses.

In TTU's 5-2 nod over UNC Asheville, Grubert, Tosetto, Berghaus and Sasagawa all notched two-set triumphs, while Rodeia carded a three-set victory. Holis and Vicente were unable to check the win column, with Vicente falling in three sets and Holis in two.

Berghaus and Rodeia teamed up for a 6-1 doubles win against Campbell's Robin Angles and Noe Macquart, while Tosetto and Grubert narrowly topped Damien Nezar and Ted Williams behind a 7-6 nod. Holis and Sasagawa dropped a 6-4 decision to Tomas Balazi and Leon Petko.

The three-day tournament is set to conclude on Sunday.


Friday 9/10 RECAP

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team dusted off the rackets and took aim in its first fall tournament of the year with opening-day action in the UNCG Fall Invitational.

The format of the tourney featured two rounds of doubles play, with Tech squaring off against Chattanooga and Radford, and one round of singles action that saw the Golden Eagles lock up with the Mocs for a second time.

TTU prevailed during singles play with wins in five-of-six battles against the Mocs, including four straight-set nods for the purple and gold. Evzen Holis powered home a two-set victory over Kerim Hyatt in the No. 2 spot, while Elias Grubert carded a straight-set triumph against Simon Labbe in the No. 3 clash and Andre Rodeia registered a two-set win against Jordan McClure in the No. 5 get-together. Mika Berghaus rounded out Tech's straight-set nods with one of his own against Jacob Marshall in the No. 6 matchup.

Rafael Tosetto played in the only three-set meeting, but collected a win over Jeffrey Dewald in the No. 4 spot.

UTC's lone win during singles action came courtesy of a two-set victory by Tomas Rodriguez against Carlos Vicente in the No. 1 affair.

The Mocs were able to strike for revenge during doubles play with wins in two of the three clashes. Holis and Jun Sasagawa were downed, 7-6, by Rodriguez and Peyton Gatti in the top spot, while Chattanooga's No. 3 tandem of Labbe and McClure topped Tosetto and Vicente, 6-2.

Berghaus and Rodeia picked up a 6-3 triumph over Hyatt and Kaisei Kuroki in the No. 2 showdown.

A similar fate struck the Golden Eagles in their tangle with Radford, as the Highlanders also earned victories in two of the three get-togethers. Guilherme Severin and Konstantinos Raptis powered home a 6-2 win against Rodeia and Berghaus in the No. 2 battle, while Robert Hagen and Aditya Balsekar secured a 6-4 nod over Vicente and Grubert out of the No. 3 position.

Holis and Sasagawa took home Tech's lone doubles win over the Highlanders with a 6-3 victory against Andres Silva and Demis Taramonlis in the top spot.

The second day of the UNCG Fall Invitational will resume on Saturday.
