COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – A contagious work ethic and team-first attitude are characteristics often associated with a leader. For the Tennessee Tech women's golf team, returning sophomore Katrine Toennessen has continued to demonstrate these qualities while developing herself both on and off the course.

"Katrine has such an optimistic personality," Tech head coach Amanda Smith said. "Any time she gets on the course, she wants to challenge herself. She is great at communicating with her teammates and does a fantastic job of showing up on time. She is reliable and trustworthy."

After missing the first two events of the fall season, Toennessen competed in both tournaments for the Golden Eagles during the month of October. She finished third for the purple and gold in both the Chris Banister Golf Classic and Terrier Intercollegiate, posting scores of 241 and 235, respectively.

"Even when she has a tough day on the course, she stays after to watch and encourage her teammates throughout the remainder of their rounds."

In the classroom, the Grimstad, Norway native has produced with flying colors, earning a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of her four semesters at Tennessee Tech University. She has also been a two-time member of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and twice has been named a WGCA All-American Scholar.

"Katrine constantly wants to push herself in the classroom and in workouts. Her ability to stay positive and have a great, growth mindset when it comes to challenges has been beneficial to this team. It's exciting to watch her continue to grow.

It is for these qualities and dedication that Toennessen is the recipient of the 2021 October Unsung Leader Award.

The Unsung Leader Award is selected from student-athletes, who have been nominated by their coaching staff, for exemplifying outstanding leadership qualities during a given month. The leadership can be shown on the field, in the weight room, at practice, in the classroom, in study hall, on campus, in the community or for a student club or organization.

The award honors a varsity student-athlete who has made a positive impact on their team and the Tennessee Tech community as a whole, through his or her dedication to demonstrating leadership traits, such as:

  1. Keep learning, growing and improving
  2. Follow through with excellence
  3. Accomplish more than expected
  4. Inspire and motivate others
