COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- With a 1-3 record on the season thus far, the Tennessee Tech men's basketball team will take on the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State in Alabama on Saturday to commence conference play for the 2010-11 season. The game, with tip-off scheduled for 7:45 p.m., will be the second of a double-header event shared with the Golden Eagle women's team.
Tech will be looking to build upon their recent win over SIU Edwardsville in Wednesday evening's home opener, as they downed the Cougars by a score of 78-65. The win marked number 130 for head coach Mike Sutton, giving him the second spot in all-time career wins at Tech.
Juniors Kevin Murphy and Zac Swansey led the Golden Eagles through a second half comeback by Edwardsville. Murphy saw his first 20-point performance of the season, notching 20 points and chipping in seven rebounds. Swansey finished with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals on the night.
The Gamecocks, meanwhile have lost six of their last seven games, most recently suffering a 59-53 loss to the University of Alabama – Birmingham. Holding a 2-6 overall record, they'll be playing at home for the first time since November 22, and the game marks their first conference match-up as well.
Last season, the two opponents split contests, despite Tech scoring 72 points in each. JSU took a hefty 11 point win (83-72) early on in the season, but gave up the rematch to the Golden Eagles in a 72-62 loss in Tech's last regular season game.
