Getting to know: Cayla Cowart

Every student-athlete has a story, details about themselves and their background that extend beyond just the playing field and athletics.

Throughout the summer, we will take a look at the members of the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team and get to know more about them, the student-athletes who are representing not just their home communities, but also the University, Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland as they don the purple and gold. We asked the team to provide 10 facts about themselves that they want you, the fans, to know about them.

Today's subject is Cayla Cowart. A Georgia all-state selection who ranks second in career points and first in career assists at West Forsyth High, Cowart led the Wolverines to a 22-8 record last season as well as a deep playoff run.

Here's 10 things Cowart wants you to know about her:

  1. I've lived in the same house in Georgia on Lake Lanier for my whole life with my two older brothers, Casey and Colby.
  2. My mom has been there for me every step of the way. She is my best friend and favorite person in the whole world. Everyone's second mom and role model!
  3. I am obsessed with animals. If you know me, you know if I see an animal anywhere, I have to pet it. That's just the rules. I truly believe it can turn anyone's day around.
  4. I can play the piano and my favorite song to play is "Für Elise."
  5. I am in the Hall of Fame at my high school for being one of eight to receive the Golden Wolverine award.
  6. Meeting new people is one of my favorite things about going different places. You can never know too many people! Who knows – maybe they needed a friend that day.
  7. I aspire to be like my nana every day because she was the most thoughtful, unselfish, funny and kindhearted person. She made everyone around her a better person. Just thinking about her makes me smile!
  8. My favorite food to make right now is a bagel with cream cheese, add two scrambled eggs and three slices of oven-roasted turkey. So yummy! Thank me later :)
  9. Growing up, I wanted to be a gymnast, but, once I started playing basketball in the driveway with my brothers, that quickly changed. My competitiveness got the best of me.
  10. I have a disturbing amount of Starbucks points and I refuse to use them. My order is a venti vanilla sweet cream cold brew with three pumps of dark caramel and three pumps of white mocha.
