Golden Eagles unable to overcome Racer defense on Friday

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech softball team managed to get ten hits Friday, but was unable to bring in a run as the Racers of Murray State picked up a pair of one-run wins in Cookeville.

Racer pitchers Shelby Kosmecki and Chelsea Sullivan both earned shutouts, winning each game 1-0. Kosmecki allowed five hits and one walk en route to her seventh victory of the season while Sullivan struck out six and improved to 6-4.

Game one opened with a lot of offense, but died down quickly. The Racers loaded the bases in the first with no outs, but senior pitcher Holly Thomas was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a double play.

The Golden Eagles managed a pair of baserunners in the fourth as senior Brooke Basten doubled and fellow senior Whitney Cummings drew a walk. Both runners were left stranded after a strikeout and a groundout.

Murray State scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning. With two on, the Racers attempted a double steal and, in an effort to throw out the runner at third, a Tech error allowed Casey Castile to score.

Tech threatened again in the seventh with two outs, putting two on with singles by Chanelle Spalding and Thomas. Sophomore Cassie Garrett then singled through the right side, but Spalding was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game.

Thomas took the loss, striking out three and walking one without allowing an earned run.

The second game saw only one runner for each team through the first two innings, before the Racers scored in the third. After being hit by a pitch, Ellyn Troup came around to score on a pair of singles to the outfield, giving Murray State the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were once again shut down by the defense of the Racers.

Taylor Ketchum suffered the loss, allowing five hits and one run while striking out one.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Tech Softball Field.
