Skyhawks Steal Two Sunday in Cookeville

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- After suspending game two on Saturday in the second inning, the Tennessee Tech softball team had to resume play on Sunday against UT-Martin. The Skyhawks took both on the day, winning 6-0 and 3-1.

The Skyhawks (16-10, 6-0 OVC) scored two runs in the first inning on Saturday before play was suspended due to weather.

As play resumed on Sunday, UT-Martin added another run in the third inning with the help of a hit batter and a Tech error. Jenny Bain hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the insurance run. The Skyhawks then tacked on three more runs over the next two innings, taking advantage of another Golden Eagle error.

Tech managed a baserunner in five of the seven innings, but was unable to put runs on the board as UT-Martin pitcher Casey Vincent picked up the shutout. She struck out eight while walking two and allowing four hits, earning her third win of the year.

Junior Claudia Harke suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs and striking out three over 4.2 innings of work.

The third game of the series began in the same fashion as UT-Martin opened the scoring early. Leah Taylor led off the first inning with a double and, after being sacrificed to third, came in to score on a wild pitch by Tech pitcher Holly Thomas.

In the bottom of the second, Thomas took matters into her own hands, hitting a first-pitch home run over the left field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

The Skyhawks retook the lead in the third, scoring two runs with the help of a pair of Tech errors.

Once again, Tech put runners on the bases in five of the seven innings, but mustered the lone run on the day.

Thomas took the loss, striking out five while giving up just three hits and one earned run. She also had Tech's only run and RBI off of her home run.

Chelsea Jones picked up her eleventh win of the year, allowing three hits and a run while striking out three.

Tech remains at home to host Jacksonville State in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon and Belmont in a single game on Thursday.
