Golden Eagles look to make noise at Buzz Classic

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Entering its final weekend of tournament play, the Tennessee Tech softball team will travel to Woodstock, Ga. to take part in the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech. While the Golden Eagles will not face the Yellow Jackets, they will take on four solid teams this weekend.

Tech opens with a single game on Friday against Georgia State. The Panthers will enter the game with a record of 11-4, plus the result of their cross-town rivalry game Wednesday against Georgia Tech. The Golden Eagles will face a pitching staff that holds batters to a .239 average and allows fewer than three earned runs per game. The first pitch for that matchup is slated for 1:30 CST.

Saturday sees Tech playing a pair of games, taking on UNC Greensboro at 3:00 and Southeastern Louisiana at 5:00. In the first game, the Golden Eagles square off against a 3-8 Spartan team that has won its last two games. In the nightcap, Tech faces the 2-13 Lions who are looking to end a five-game losing streak, pending their game Wednesday against Southern.

The Golden Eagles wrap up tournament play on Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. game against Kennesaw State. The Owls (8-5) have been strong this season, winning eight of nine games in one stretch, but have lost their last four. They boast two power hitters who are slugging more than 1.000 and have five home runs each. As a team, the Owls have struck out just 49 times this season and allowed only 15 earned runs.

Following the Buzz Classic, the Golden Eagles will hold their home opener on March 6, a doubleheader against IPFW starting at 1:00 p.m.
