Golden Eagles look to improve record at Georgia Softball Classic

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech softball team looks to continue its tournament schedule this weekend, taking part in the Georgia Softball Classic at the University of Georgia this weekend.

The Golden Eagles (1-4) will face a slew of tough opponents in Buffalo, Winthrop, Connecticut, Western Illinois, and host Georgia over the three-day event. Tech picked up its first win of the year in its last game of the Seminole Classic, topping Stephen F. Austin by a score of 3-2.

Chanelle Spalding and Kayla Floyd led the Golden Eagles in last weekend's tournament. Spalding racked up five hits and four walks while scoring three times. Floyd talled four hits and was a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.

Senior pitcher Holly Thomas picked up the win for Tech, not allowing a single earned run in her complete-game outing. Thomas has held batters to a .161 average through her first three appearances and has struck out 10.

The Golden Eagles will face just one team with a winning record so far, but that team is No. 14 Georgia. The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of North Carolina State by a score of 3-2. Georgia's wins over Army, Utah State, and Campbell have each been by eight runs or more.

Tech's other opponents, Buffalo (2-3), Winthrop (2-2), and Western Illinois (2-2) have combined to score 39 runs on the year, compared to Georgia's 34. Connecticut will see its first action of the season on Friday before going up against Tech on Saturday.

Friday's slate sees Tech face Buffalo before doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Eagles will take on Winthrop and Connecticut on Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. respectively, before wrapping up the tournament against Western Illinois and Georgia on Sunday at 8 a.m. and noon.

Live stats will be provided for all of Tech's games and an audio broadcast of the Georgia game will be available. For more information, visit the Classic's page at http://www.georgiadogs.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/021312aaa.html
