FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Tennessee Tech infielder Zach Stephens made his presence felt Monday at the Coastal League All-Star Game as he belted a clutch two-run shot over the left field fence in the top of the ninth that gave the National all-stars a 3-2 victory.
As a member of the Morehead City (N.C.) Marlins, who are part
of one of the nation’s top wooden bat leagues, Stephens has
started in all 36 games he has played in this season and ranks near
the top in several offensive categories. He currently leads the
team in doubles with nine and is second in the team in RBIs with
26.
The power Stephens displayed during his freshman, All-American
season at Tech has carried over to his stint with the Marlins as he
is second on the team in home runs with five and owns .464 slugging
percentage. His .279 batting average ranks third on the Marlins as
well.
Stephens finished his freshman campaign at Tech leading the
team in RBIs with 49, and tied for the team-lead in home runs with
10, while batting .309, on his way to earn a spot on the OVC
all-Freshman Team.
The 2011 Coastal Plain League All-Star Teams were voted upon
by each of the 15 head coaches and one media representative for
each club.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer
collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011,
the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina
and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine
their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with
local host families for the summer and past experiences have been
positive for both players and hosts.
