SIU Edwardsville opens the series with a 10-3 win over Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- The pitching and the hitting favored SIU Edwardsville Friday evening as the Cougars cruised to a 10-3 win over Tennessee Tech behind Travis Felax's complete game.

SIUE did not waste any time as it opened the game with a two-run first inning as Travis Becherer cranked a two-run shot to right field to put the Cougars up 2-0.

The Cougars added three more runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-0 as they chased TTU starter Tristan Archer from the game after 2.2 innings.

Seth Lucio, who came on in relief of Archer in the third, gave up a three-run home run to Devin Caldwell that put the Cougars up 8-0.

SIUE added an additional run in the sixth off a solo-shot from Matt Highland and another in the ninth off an RBI-double from Becherer.

While the Cougars produced at the plate, Felax was nearly lights out as he held the Golden Eagles to just one run through the sixth innings. TTU was able to tack on one more run in the seventh and an unearned run in the ninth, but Felax would not be denied his complete game as he stopped Tech's ninth-inning rally to secure the win.

The Tech hitters managed to put three runs on the board as they tallied eight hits. James Abraham drove in TTU's first run in the third on an RBI-single. Zephan Guyear drove the final two runs for Tech with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and an RBI-single in the ninth.

Felax (5-3) earned the win as he gave up three runs, two earned, through nine innings while striking out seven. Archer (3-3) took the loss as he allowed five runs in 2.2 innings.

Lucio allowed four runs in 3.1 innings, before being lifted for Jake McWhirter who allowed just one unearned run in three innings of work.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
