Golden Eagles upended by UT Martin in series finale

MARTIN, Tenn. --- Sunday's game between Tennessee Tech and UT Martin got out of hand quickly as the Skyhawks tallied 10 runs in the first two innings in their 13-6 win.

TTU starter Seth Lucio ran into trouble early on in his fourth career start as he surrendered nine runs, four of which were earned, in 1.2 innings.

Phil Sorenson provided the biggest punch for the UTM offense as he drove in four of his five RBI with a grand slam in the second inning. Sonny Mastromatteo also had a good day for the Skyhawks as he drove in three runs of his own.

While UT Martin was driving in the runs, UTM starter Carter Smith threw five innings in which he gave up two runs, while striking out five. His lone blemishes came in the form of a solo-shot from Ben Burgess in the second, and a fielder's choice from Austin Wulf in the fourth.

Down 10-2 at the end of the sixth, the Golden Eagles put together a four-run rally to pull within four of the Skyhawks at 10-6. Tech scattered five hits, including a two-run single from Dylan Bosheers.

UTM was able to weather the storm however as it tallied one run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth as it wrapped up the series with a 13-6 win.

Smith (3-0) took the win for the Skyhawks, while Lucio (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Tech reliever Cullen Park struck out five batters in 4.1 innings for the Golden Eagles while giving up just one run. Josh Bryant, Andy Williams and Burgess finished the game for TTU as they combined for the final six outs.

Tech wraps up its road trip Tuesday against Vanderbilt at 6 p.m.
