Pitcher’s duel favors Eastern Kentucky as TTU falls 4-0

RICHMOND, Ky. --- Both starting pitchers were in fine form Saturday afternoon as Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky combined for just 12 hits as the Colonels shutout the Golden Eagles 4-0.

Despite the final score, the game remained close near the tail end of the eighth inning as the Colonels held a slim 2-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Soloman added two insurance runs to give EKU the 4-0 lead.

TTU starter Matthew Shepherd and EKU starter Matt Fyffe kept both offenses in check early on as the game headed into the bottom of the third scoreless. Sean Hagen got the scoring going with an RBI-single in the third, but Shepherd managed to get out of the inning with no more damage.

After a pair of scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Colonels managed to extend their lead to 2-0 after a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Fyffe (8-0) earned the win as he threw a complete-game shutout, while giving up just three hits and three walks, while striking out one. Shepherd (4-4) was saddled with the loss as he gave up four runs in 7.2 innings, while posting 10 strikeouts. Zane Morton came on in relief to get the final out in the eighth.

Austin Wulf, James Abraham and Ben Burgess record TTU's three hits, with Burgess posting his eighth double of the season.

Richie Rodriguez and Dustin Dunlop led the Colonels with two hits each, with Rodriguez scoring a game-high two runs.

TTU (19-30, 9-14 OVC) wraps up its series with EKU Sunday at 11 a.m. The game time moved up one hour due to the possibility of bad weather.
