Tech men's golf team place third at Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team captured its fourth top-five finish of the year Tuesday afternoon, securing a third-place showing at its own, annual Bobby Nichols Scramble at Sevierville Golf Club.

Wrapping up play with the second and final round on the River Course, the Golden Eagles fired off a 12-under 276 to tally a 563 overall, just four shots back of second-place Oral Roberts. Carson-Newman took home the tournament title for the second time, producing a 275-272=547 for a 12-stroke win.

Carson-Newman's Elliot MacGregor was named the individual medalist after besting Oral Roberts' Lane Wallace in a scorecard playoff, with both golfers posting scores of 135.

For the purple and gold, a pair of youngsters led the effort during the week, with Nick Sutton and Jackson Skeen both tying for seventh in the field of 93 golfers with scores of 139. A sophomore, Sutton carded a 3-under 69 with five birdies on the day. Skeen, a redshirt freshman, dropped off a 2-under 70, also collecting five birdies to go along with an eagle on the par-5 seventh.

Tying for the tournament's low round on the day was Bracton Womack, who erupted for a 5-under 67 to tie for 19th overall. Finishing with a 142 for the week, the senior ripped off 14 pars, three birdies, and an eagle on the par-5 10th.

Fellow upperclassman Chance Taylor concluded his week in a tie for 27th, securing a 2-under 70. The junior piped in six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th. Rounding out the Tech lineup, sophomore Mark McDearman turned in a 1-over 73, tying for 32nd with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 10th.

Four Golden Eagles competed as individuals, with sophomore Sean Anderson pacing the group with a 151 to tie for 58th. He secured a trio of birdies for a 78. Junior Bryce Beeler also finished with a 78, posting two birdies for a 153 and tie for 65th.

Redshirt freshman Alexander Bassel delivered a strong showing, cutting a whopping 14 strokes from his first round to secure a 1-over 73. He tied for 81st with a 160, collecting three birdies on the day. True freshman Avery Irwin also tied for 81st, finishing with 12 pars for an 81 and a 160 overall.

The Golden Eagles return to action next week at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo. Hosted by Missouri State, the tournament will run from Monday, Mar. 21 through Tuesday, Mar. 22 at the Twin Oaks Country Club.
