MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A stellar second-round showing was the story for the Tennessee Tech men's golf team in day two of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at the True Blue Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.
The Golden Eagles posted a 277 overall, tying with Temple for the second-lowest team mark on the day in the field of 18. Tech's 11-under was only bested by Mercer's 14-under, but the combined 13-stroke improvement from the first to second round pushes the purple and gold in a tie with Jacksonville State for fourth place through the first two days.
At 9-under, Tech sits only two strokes back of Temple for third and three strokes back of Delaware for second. Mercer is leading the tournament with a combined 29-under over the first two rounds.
Individually, all five Golden Eagles improved their scores from the first round to the second, and with the strong charge, four of Tech's own are now inside the top 30 in the field of 93 individuals.
Bracton Womack's second-round 3-under 69 pushed him into a tie with California Baptist's James Mackie and Stephen F. Austin's Jacob Garcia into a tie for ninth. Nick Sutton's team-best 4-under 68 propelled him 24 spots into a tie for 19th place with Brady Bennett out of New Orleans and fellow Golden Eagle Mark McDearman, who posted a 2-under 70 to jump up three spots.
Chance Taylor's 2-under 70 proved to be four strokes better than his first round to catapult him 13 spots up into a tie for 30th. Bryce Beeler rounded out Tech's showing with a six-stroke improvement behind a 4-over 76 to move into a tie for 89th.
Wofford's Harry Jones is the individual leader through two rounds thanks to a combined 11-under.
The third and final round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge is set to get underway at 6:45 a.m. CT.
