Keck, Mayhew shine as Golden Eagles place third at Boston-Moon Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Kelli Keck set a school record in the triple jump and 17 personal best marks were established Saturday as the Tennessee Tech women's track & field team piled up 106.5 points to finish a strong third in the Boston-Moon Classic at Tennessee State University.

Tech's throwers and distance runners were the strength of the Golden Eagle efforts, including first-place finishes in the shot put, discus, hammer throw and 3,000-meter run.

Senior Ashley Mayhew won both the shot put and the hammer throw to account for 20 of Tech's points in the meet. Sophomore Madison Borden topped that, earning first place in the discus and third in both the shot and hammer to add 22 points to the Golden Eagle total.

Tech also cleaned up in the 3,000-meter run, capturing the top five finishes led by junior Traci Jones to account for 33 points in one event.

Host Tennessee State finished atop the team standings, using strong showings in the sprints and hurdles, to claim 135.5 points. Middle Tennessee State, also dominating in the sprints and hurdles, was second with 124.83 points.

Tech was third with 106.5 points, just one point ahead of Lipscomb (105.5). OVC rival Jacksonville State was fifth with 89.83 points.

Keck, a first-year member of the squad from Crossville's Stone Memorial High School, placed eighth in the triple jump with a combination that reached 36 feet, 10.5 inches. That broke the previous TTU mark of 36 feet, 8.25 inches set by Lauren Addie at the 2007 OVC Championships.

Brittany Cotto, a freshman from Sacramento, Calif., placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best time og 1:06.37, the third-best time in school history.

Freshman Peri Winborne, running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time in her Tech career, placed seventh in 12:50.56, accounting for a couple of points for her team's total.

In the high jump, senior Katherine Lynn cleared 5 feet, 6 inches, finishing in a tie for third place while adding 4.5 points to Tech's total.

Mayhew's winning toss of 42 feet, one-half inch in the shot put was just short of her career-best mark. Borden also came up just shy of a career-mark with a toss of 37 feet, 11.5 inches to place third.

In the discus, Borden had a winning throw of 124 feet, 4 inches, while Haley Wennerstrom place third at 94 feet, 10 inches.

Mayhew's second win of the meet came with a throw of 156 feet, 7 inches in the hammer throw, just short of the school record that she established last week. Borden was third with a career-best mark of 116 feet, 3 inches.
