NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Now that's senior leadership.
Seniors Katherine Lynn
and Ashley
Mayhew not only won their events at the TSU Invitational, they
each broke school indoor records as the Tennessee Tech track &
field team had a strong showing Saturday in the Gentry Center.
Lynn (shown in photo) won the high jump by clearing the bar at a
school-record 5 feet, 7 inches. It topped the previous mark of 5
feet, 6 inches set by Amy Campbell in 2004.
Mayhew claimed the weight throw, chucking one 54 feet, 11.25
inches to better the previous standard which she had set last year
at 50 feet, 4.75 inches at the same TSU event.
Tech also had 10 other Top 10 finishes, led by Katie Lowery's
third-place finish in the pole vault. She cleared the bar at 9
feet, 6.25 inches in an event held Friday night at Austin Peay.
Tech had three runners finish in the top eight of the 5,000-meter run, led by freshman Peri Winborne with a fifth-place showing. Beth Miller placed sixth and Meghan O'Donoghue was eighth.
In addition to her win in the weight throw, Mayhew also earned
fifth place in the shot put. Madison Borden,
who posted personal best marks in two events, was ninth in the shot
put and 11th in the weight throw.
Traci Jones
had the other Top 10 individual showing for the Golden Eagles,
placing 10th in the mile run early in the day.
Both of Tech's distance medley relay teams placed in the top 10,
the "A" team finishing seventh and the "B" lineup placing
10th.
Coach Tony Cox also had a handful of entries in the men's events, and freshman Matthew Bishop produced a win for Tech. He claimed first place in the 5,000-meter run in the time of 15:38.53.
The Golden Eagle track team will be in Sewanee next Saturday for
the University of the South Invitational.
