Lowery breaks record, Tech finishes eighth at OVC Indoor Championships

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- After posting 16 points Friday on the opening day, the Tennessee Tech women's track & field team added seven more points Saturday -- including a school record performance in the pole vault by sophomore Katie Lowery -- finishing in eighth place at the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships held at Eastern Illinois University.

Host EIU won the women's crown with 177.33 points, claiming the title by a comfortable margin over runnerup Eastern Kentucky with 139.50 points. Southeast Missouri (106.5) was third, followed by Jacksonville State (63.33), Tennessee State (48), Austin Peay (38), Murray State (28.33) and Tennessee Tech (23).

On Saturday, senior Ashley Mayhew earned four points with a fifth place finish in the shot put. She had also placed Friday in the weight throw. Her toss Saturday was 41 feet, 3.25 inches.

Tech claimed one point in the pole vault where sophomore Katie Lowery claimed eighth place, breaking her own school record with a jump of 10 feet.

The other two points came in the 4x400 relay where Tech's team of Krysten Joshen, Jenna Philpott, Brittney Cotto and Emily Weinzetl place seventh in the time of 4:09.15.

In addition to Lowery's effort, Tech had one more career-best showing Saturday when Kelli Keck went 35 feet, 7.75 inches in the triple jump.
