COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In a meet named to honor of pair of
track & field legends, the Tennessee Tech women's track squad
will be in Nashville Saturday looking to produce some impressive
performances of their own.
Coach Tony Cox takes his Golden Eagles to the 9th
Annual Boston-Moon Classic, hosted by Tennessee State University at
the Edward S. Temple Track Complex.
The meet honors two TSU men's track and field legends -- three
time Olympic medalist Ralph Boston and former 100m-world record
holder John Moon.
"We're excited about this meet," Cox said. "We look forward to
this meet every year. Tennessee State does a great job hosting the
meet, and we get to go up against some very good, challenging
competition. It gives our runners, jumpers and throwers a chance to
see just where they are at this point in the season."
The Classic will also host a high school section, which kicked off on Friday afternoon with the boy's shot put and preliminary running events. The finals of the high school events are scheduled for Saturday.
The collegiate portion of the meet will open with the women's hammer throw at 1 p.m. All running events on Saturday will start with the collegiate women's steeplechase and move into a rolling schedule. The event is expected to run until approximately 8:30 p.m.
Collegiate teams scheduled to participate in addition to Tennessee Tech and host Tennessee State include Alabama A&M, Albany State, Belmont, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee State, Morehouse, Rust and Shorter.
Tech is coming off a solid fifth-place effort at Jacksonville
State's Gem of the Hills Invitational last week. Senior Ashley Mayhew led
Tech in the meet, scoring 15 of the team's points with a
first-place toss in the hammer throw and a fourth-place performance
in the shot put. Her hammer throw mark of 157 feet, 3 inches
shattered her own school record by 17 feet.
Senior high jumper Katherine Lynn is
also enjoying a stellar spring season. After capturing the OVC
championship at the Indoor meet, she has been at the top of the
charts in her event during the outdoor season including a
second-place finish at JSU.
Cox will also look for several distance runners to score points at
Boston-Moon event, including freshmen Peri Winborne and
Rebecca
Cline and junior Traci Jones.
Speedy Brittany Cotto
could also notch some points in the 400-meter hurdles after posting
a career-best time last week at JSU.
Final results of the TSU meet will be posted on TTUsports.com once
they become available late Saturday night.
