SPRING HILL, Tenn. -- Freshman Mason Griffin earned the first
all-tournament honor of his budding Golden Eagle career by
fininshing tied for fourth individiually, and Tennessee Tech
maintained its hold on fifth place Tuesday in the rain-shortened
Big Blue Classic hosted by Tennessee State University.
The Golden Eagles were tied for fifth after Monday's first round,
which finished just ahead of rains and storms across the mid-state
region. Because of the weather, the tournament was shortened to 36
holes, and the Golden Eagles followed Monday's 301 with a 304 in
Tuesday's final round for a 605 total.
Murray State jumped from third place to the top of the team
standings with a final round 296 and a two-day team total of 595.
Morehead State, which opened the day tied with Tech in fifth place,
also broke 300 on Tuesday with a 299 and bumped itself up to second
place at 600. UT Martin (601) and first-day leader Tennessee State
(601) wound up tied for third place.
The remainder of the 12-team standings had John A. Logan College
just a shot behind the Golden Eagles (606), followed by Lipscomb
(613), Trevecca Nazarene (620), Valparaiso (620), Savannah State
(635) and Alabama State (639).
Murray State's Cameron Carrico won medalist honors with a
73-69--142 total, three shots better than runnerup Ryan Pierson
(71-74--145) of Tennessee State. Alex Misback of Morehead State
(73-73--146) was third, while Griffin (73-74--147) and Graham
Sleigh of UT Martin (72-75--147) tied for fourth to complete the
all-tournament team. Griffin had six birdies in the 36 holes, the
second-most birdies in the tournament among the 67 golfers.
Sam Schrock, another true freshman in the Golden Eagle lineup,
placed in a tie for 11th after shootnig 74-76--150. Junior Tyler
Cassetty cut four shots off his first round to climb all the way to
24th place at 78-74--152. Redshirt freshman Greg Kitts (76-80--156)
was tied for 38th place, including one of just seven eagles in the
tournament, while Lee Maxwell completed Tech's lineup, finishing at
82-86--168.
Junior Travis Ramsey, playing individually for Tech, slipped on
Tuesday after opening with a 76 on Monday. His second-round score
of 91 dropped him to a 167 total and a tie for 62nd place.
The Big Blue outing wrapped up the regular season for the Golden
Eagles, who will now begin preparing for the Ohio Valley Conference
tournament, April 25-27 in Dickson, Tenn.
