HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. -- Tenessee Tech is one of a dozen teams
battling for second place at the men's half of the F&M Bank
Intercollegiate golf tournament, being hosted by Austin Peay. The
Golden Eagles have an uphill climb, but are in the meix of schools
looking to close the 54-hole tournament with a flourish Tuesday at
the 6,841-yard, par 72 Links at Lovadell.
Jacksonville State appears to have a lock on first place in the
17-team field, posting scores of 283 and 259 Monday for a 542 total
and a 15-shot lead over second-place Bowling Green State. The
Falcons (557) are three shots better than Samford (560), four ahead
of Eastern Illinois (561) and five up on Oakland (562) in the Top
Five.
Tech is tied for 10th place, shooting rounds of 282 and 286 Monday
for a 568 total. The Golden Eagles are tied with Eastern Kentucky,
Austin Peay and Tennessee State for 10th. Just ahead of that
foursome of OVC schools are UT Martin in sixth place at 563, Murray
State seveth at 565, Troy (566) and Towson State (567).
"We have to play well Tuesday, but we have a real chance to move
up in the standings," said coach Craig King. "We had some good
scores Monday, but we weren't consistent. It will take a real solid
effort from everybody, but that's our goal."
Freshman Sam Schrock shot a career-best 69 in the opening round
Monday and followed with a 71, placing him in a tie for 18th place
at four-under par 140. Mason Griffin, another Golden Eagle
freshman, is next at 143, placing him in a tie for 36th place. He
shot rounds of 70 and 73 Monday.
Greg Kitts, a redshirt freshman, is also tied for 36th. He shot a
69 in the opeing round and closed the day with a 74. Junior Tyler
Cassetty posted scores of 74 and 70 Monday and finds himself tied
for 42nd place at 144, while junior Lee Maxwell is tied for 69th
place after scores of 76 and 72 for a 148 total.
JSU's Matthew Wallace scorched the course for a 62 in the second
round and holds the individual lead at 133. Teammate Gonzalo Belin
is tied for second after shooting 71 and 64 for a 135. Eastern
Kentucky's Billy Peel is tied for second with scores of 69 and
66.
