COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech men's golf team hopes to make some noise this week at the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, a 54-hole event at the GreyStone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn. A field of nine teams tees off Monday morning, with second round action Tuesday and the final tour of the 6,858-yard, par 72 layout slated for Wednesday.

Golden Eagle coach Craig King will take one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen in his tourney lineup, headed by veteran Tyler Cassetty. The junior from Whitleyville, Tenn., owns the best average on the team of 73.9. Tech's lineup will also include sophomore Lee Maxwell, redshirt freshman Greg Kitts, and true freshmen Sam Schrock and Mason Griffin.

The men's golf championship will feature nine teams - Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. The teams will have a practice round on Sunday and tee off on Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.

The annual awards banquets will be held following the first round of play on Monday. The banquet will honor the All-OVC first-team and second-team members as well as All-Newcomer Team and Freshman of the Year. The OVC Player of the Year, Coach of the Year as well as All-Tournament and Tournament MVP awards will be presented at the conclusion of the championship.

Designed by PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber, GreyStone Golf Club offers a great championship course and great staff. Located in historic Dickson, the golf course is a short drive from Nashville and is easily accessible from throughout middle Tennessee. Opened in 1998, GreyStone Golf Club is a public course that has hosted numerous high profile events including PGA Tour qualifying, Senior PGA Tour qualifying and the Tennessee State Open.
 
This marks the second year in a row that GreyStone has hosted the OVC Men's and Women's Championships and the course will also host the event each of the next two seasons. Last year the Murray State men's and women's teams claimed championships, marking only the second time in OVC history one school had swept both Championships.

After missing out on the 2009 OVC Championship by a single stroke, Murray State rebounded a season ago in leading from start-to-finish and winning by 18 total strokes, the third time in the last four seasons the OVC crown had been determined by more than 10 strokes. It was the fourth OVC crown for the Racers and first since the 1991 season. The Racers were the fourth different team to win the OVC Championship in the last four years. Individually Murray State senior Nick Newcomb claimed his second medalist crown in three years with a one shot victory over teammate Jared Wolfe.
 
This year Jacksonville State had the top team stroke average, netting 290.4 strokes per round in 26 total rounds. That was 0.7 strokes ahead of Murray State (291.1). Since joining the OVC in 2003-04 Jacksonville State has claimed two titles (2004, 2007). UT Martin's 297.6 average is third, while Tech enter the OVC Tournament with the fourth-best scoring average in the league. The Golden Eagles have posted a 298.5 average in 22 tournament rounds of play. 

Individually Murray State's Cameron Carrico, who earned four OVC Golfer of the Week honors during the spring, led the league in stroke average at 71.1 over 30 total rounds. That was 1.6 strokes better than Jacksonville State's Tom Robson (72.7). Robson's teammates, Gonzalo Berlin (72.8) and Andres Schonbaum (72.9), ranked third and fourth in the league while Eastern Kentucky's Billy Peel, Jr. was fifth (73.2).

For the Golden Eagles, Cassetty's 73.9 average ranks 12th in the OVC. Mason Griffin ranks 20th in the OVC with a 74.7 average.
