COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Several former NFL standouts, a Heisman
Trophy winner, the Tennessee Titans current starting quarterback
and dozens of former Golden Eagle players were on hand Friday night
and Saturday as the Tennessee Tech football team held its annual
Alumni Golf Classic at the Cookeville Golf Club.
All proceeds from the tournament go to the Tennessee Tech football
program and the Robert Hill Johnson endowment.
The weekend was packed with reminiscing and sharing memories and
tall tales as head coach Watson Brown and his entire staff hosted a
field of 100 golfers. Titans quarterback Jake Locker and Seattle
Sehawks offensive lineman Frank Omiyale, a former Golden Eagle,
represented the current crop of NFL players. Several former pro
players joined the group including some of Tech's most decorated
players -- Jim Youngblood, Larry Schreiber, Jim Bishop, Wayne
Anderson and Steve Davis.
South Carolina Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers returned to
the event, bringing his hardware with him, and many folks took the
opportunity to have their photo taken with George and the famous
statue.
Former Golden Eagle assistant coach Gerald Brown, currently an
assistant with the Atlanta Falcons, was on hand. So was former
Minnesota Viking punter Neil Clabo.
The heavy evening rains held off just long enough for the golf
tournament to wrap up, moving everyone indoors just in time for the
silent auction and dinner.
This year's gathering was the largest ever for the event.
Prior to the golf outing on Saturday, participants enjoyed a
Friday night BBQ dinner. The dinner was sponsored by Miller Lite
and Stone Steel and featured some of the South's best barbecue for
what has become a legendary feast.
Former Golden Eagle Tom Pemberton headed up this year's event, and
was happy with the outstanding turnout and enthusiastic
particioantion.
"It's a great chance for former players to come back and meet with
the coaching staff, to gain a little insight into the 2013 season,
and to visit and reminisce about the past," Pemberton said. "The
most important aspect, is that the tournament continues to grow and
raise money for the Robert Hill Johnson Scholarship Endowment and
for the TTU football progam."
