Purple and Gold Scrimmage preps Golden Eagle squad for first tournament

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech volleyball team put on their jerseys for the first time this season, donning them during the Purple and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles had the opportunity to get some jitters out as they played in front of Tech fans at the Eblen Center. Every athlete had the opportunity to shake some of the "game day rust" off in preparation for the upcoming season.

"Today was a good chance for us to put the jerseys on and compete a little bit and get used to playing in front of people," head coach Dave Zelenock said. "CJ (Cassandra Joyner) and Lola (Oladinni) drafted teams midweek and got to practice alone with their teams to make it more game-like. There was a good rivalry going, which was fun for me, and the fans to watch. We got most of our players back from injury yesterday, so they got to ease into things today and they looked good. This week we will work on putting a lineup out there for this weekend at Appalachian State, and see where it goes from there. We keep getting players back over the next few weeks so our lineup will most likely be very changing until we get deep into the OVC schedule."

"Hopefully our fans got a chance to see some of what we can do and the athleticism we have brought in. I know it's always weird for fans because they don't know who to cheer for when they are competing against each other, so it was a pretty quiet arena today.  I expect to be able to put on a good show for them when we come back home on Sept. 26."

The Golden Eagles open the 2014 season against in-state rival Tennessee at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C. on Friday at 3 p.m. CT.
