Golden Eagles swept by second-ranked Bruins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior libero Courtney Smith provided an exceptional defensive effort for the Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Tennessee Tech volleyball team (12-18, 7-7) fell to Belmont, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16).

The Knoxville, Tenn., native cleaned up the backcourt in the opening set to the tune of 16 digs in the closest of the three sets. She finished with 30 digs between the three sets combined.

The Bruins and Golden Eagles traded points through the opening part of the first set, including a tie at 15-15, but from there the Bruins took over, outscoring Tech 10-5 to win the set.

Junior Cody Dodd led the way offensively, putting down a team-high 12 kills, adding five digs and three blocks. Freshman Kellie Williams added nine kills. Sophomore setter Sharon Anderson dished out 25 assists, adding six digs.

Belmont (15-13, 11-3), who is currently in second place in the Ohio Valley Conference, was led by Arianna Person who recorded the only double-double of the match, with 17 kills and 11 digs. Scarlet Gable added nine kills. Emily Richards scooped up 16 digs.

The Golden Eagles return home on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. CT match with Jacksonville State.
