COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech volleyball team gave out its team awards recently as voted on by the players and coaches.

"This year had the closest voting in all the categories that I've ever seen," head coach Dave Zelenock said of the voting results. "That's a testament to how close this team is and how much everyone contributes in each category. I've been part of teams where there were a couple people who improved and couple who got worse and the rest stayed the same. This year we had so many players getting better on a daily basis it was tough, and that applies to the other awards as well."

Four players earned awards including the Spirit Award for the player who showed the most team spirit throughout the season, the Most Improved Award for the player who showed the most improvement throughout the season, the Best Teammate Award for the Golden Eagle who displayed the ability to be a good teammate consistently, and finally the Coach's Award for the player who, on and off the court, was one the coaches relied on.

Senior Allison May served as a link between the coaches and the team this season as she helped lead the Golden Eagles to an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinal finish. For her leadership efforts, May was honored with the 2014 Coaches Award. May returned for her fifth season after recovering from ACL surgery in just four months.

Following a tremendous senior season, libero Courtney Smith was given the 2014 Best Teammate Award for the second-straight year. The Knoxville native finished her Tech career second all-time in career digs with 1,764. She was also named to the 2014 OVC All-Tournament Team.

Freshman Jordan Wachowiak finished the 2014 season with a team-high 109 total blocks, adding 126 kills. For her improved efforts throughout the year, Wachowiak was named the 2014 Most Improved Player.

Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Povey was the recipient of the 2014 Spirit Award. Whether on the court or off, Povey's attitude showed through her cheering and her enthusiasm, and her teammates noticed, honoring her with the award.
