Final round of OVC Championship cancelled due to weather

DICKSON, Tenn. -- After a climbing from sixth to third at the Ohio Valley Conference championship tournament on Friday, the Tennessee Tech men's golf team had its hopes for a title dashed by the weather in Dickson, Tenn. The third and final round has been cancelled, leaving Tech with a third-place finish.

This marks Tech's highest finish since 2006 when head coach Polk Brown was a member of the team. That year, the Golden Eagles forced a playoff against Eastern Kentucky before falling to the Colonels.

Austin Peay won the 2013 championship with a two-round team score of 568, followed by Jacksonville State and Tech with a 577 and 581, respectively. The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 286 on Friday, the second best of any team round on the weekend.

Individually, Murray State's Patrick Newcomb won the title with a 5-under-par 139. 

Tech was led by sophomore Lee Whitehead, who carded rounds of 70 and 72 to finish at 2-under, placing him in eighth for the tournament. Senior Lee Maxwell was close behind, shooting rounds of 75 and 71 in his final tournament as a Golden Eagle. 

Fellow senior Greg Kitts ended his career with a 73+75=148, tying for 25th place. 

The highlight of the tournament for Tech came at the hands of freshman Adam Cunningham, who carded a tournament-low round of 68 on Friday. The Cookeville native posted four birdies and an eagle, improving his Thursday score by an impressive 14 strokes. He finished the weekend at in a tie for 33rd, after being as low as 52nd on Thursday. 

Mitchell Thomas, a member of the OVC All-Newcomer team, rounded out the Tech squad shooting a 76 on Friday and tying for 44th place with a 153.
